CHARACTER NAME: Perona
FANDOM: One Piece
CANON: Just after encountering Zoro, Sanji, and Luffy on the Sabaody Archipelago
WHAT THEY LOST: Memories of Bearsy being animated as a zombie. Bearsy is a stuffed animal that accompanies Perona, but during her time with Gekko Moria, who can animate corpses and objects with his devil fruit, Bearsy was animated and "alive." Although she didn't mind abusing him, she actually liked the stuffed bear a lot, and it was her most constant companion. With the loss, she wouldn't remember him being anything other than an inanimate teddy bear.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Perona seems very self-concerned at first glance. She's selfish, caring more about how something affects her more than anything else. When an intruder invades the ship she's aboard, she tries to go back to sleep. When the owner of the house she's staying in tells her to do something, she snaps that she won't be ordered around. The most notable example of this is when things take a turn for the worse, she abandons the pirate crew she had been with for over a decade, since she was a child, and even takes all their treasure and rations with her.

However, she's not completely self-absorbed. In the previous example, she refuses to tell an enemy any information on her captain, even though she was abandoning him and it would make things much easier for her. Later, she's more than willing to patch up Zoro when he arrives on the island she's staying on, even though she doesn't get anything out of it, and even though he was formerly an enemy. Simply put, she's not incapable of kindness, even if it seems like she's completely self-absorbed, and even sometimes cruel.

Perona is very confident in herself. Not in the way that she believes herself to be invincible, but rather that she believes she should always be obeyed, she's always right, and that she's above others. This goes hand-in-hand with the selfishness mentioned. Even if it's a legendary pirate, the world's greatest swordsman, or her fellow crewmates, she refuses to simply be ordered around. But when she says something, she expects people to not only listen, but to have it done immediately, with no complaints. That's the kind of girl she is.

She's also obsessed with what she considers "cute." While some parts of this are normal (she finds teddy bears and gothic Lolita to both be cute, for example,) other parts are not. She adores dark, gothic, and haunted settings, even to the point of losing herself in a daydream about haunted castles when faced with a legendary pirate as a possible opponent. In fact, she claims that her dream is to turn an entire island of cute things into her zombie minions, only able to listen to her. This dream is a good measure of her personality, though, unlike most people in One Piece, her dream isn't much of a driving force for her, and, in fact, she seems perfectly content later to give up on it.

Some might think she's childish because of her love for "cute" things. In that vein, she does exhibit some playfulness. She plays around in her "Wonder Garden," the area dedicated to her and her army of zombie animals aboard Moria's ship. In battle, she also plays around, using tricks to frighten people for no real reason other than being funny.

Perona's power, given to her by the "Horo Horo Fruit," (Horo means Hollow,) a devil fruit, are over ghosts. Simply put, she can split her "soul" into pieces, which appear as incorporeal ghosts. She can see and hear through them, and they have various other abilities as well. This fruit might be the reason she's so obsessed with horror and gothic type things, and it's definitely the reason for her unique laugh (horohorohorohoro!)

She lived with Gekko Moria, one of the Shichibukai, for almost ten years. However, her life there wasn't fulfilling: she had zombie animals, given life by Moria's power, but there was no love lost between any of the actual crewmates there. The person she was closest to was her stuffed bear, given life by Moria as well. She abused him horribly, but it was the closest thing she had to a friend. After leaving, she ended up on the island inhabited only by Mihawk, the world's greatest swordsman, and later, by a twist of fate, Zoro, a Straw Hat, ended up there as well. They lived together for the next two years, and while she certainly had arguments with them, it was a better experience for her than being with Moria's crew had been.

The easiest way to summarize Perona's personality is that she's based off a spoiled princess. She thinks she's always right, she wants to have things her way, but she's still just a childish girl who doesn't truly mean ill by it.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: It was raining. Perona found that the weather often took a gloomy turn.... and that fit her just fine. If it wasn't a downpour, it was mist, and if it wasn't mist, it was nighttime. What a perfect island she had ended up on.

She was perfectly dry, of course, even being out in said weather. She wasn't out and about in her astral body. No, she simply had her trusty umbrella over her head. Still, the rain was picking up, and while she enjoyed the gloomy atmosphere, she did not enjoy getting wet. Time to head back to her mansion. Granted, it wasn't hers, in the strictest sense, but it was what she currently called home. The fact it belonged to Mihawk was something she tried to overlook.

As she trekked back, her concentration (she was trying to take in the scenery on the way back, you see) was broken by a rather pathetic sound.

"Mew."

How clichéd could you get? In front of Perona there was a sopping wet, pitiable-looking kitten. It mewled once more.

Wet kittens weren't cute. They were annoying, mangy, and not the kind of thing that interested Perona at all. With a casual harrumph, she moved to step around it.

And then she was immediately crouched down next to it, protecting it from the rain with her umbrella. Something had caught her eye as she moved to ignore the creature: a scar along its back, which looked remarkably like stitching. How adorable! How cute!

"Come on," Perona said, holding out a hand. There was no coaxing, no squealing, just a simple command. The kitten sensed imminent death and moved away, but the ghost princess was faster, snatching it by the scruff of its neck and pulling it to her.

A few minutes later, and she was walking in through the front door of the mansion. By some stroke of luck, Mihawk and Zoro were both toweling off their hair just inside, most likely just having come in from their training as well. However, both men stopped when they saw what Perona was carrying.

"What?" Perona asked, her tone just daring the two to say anything.

Naturally, they did.

"What's that thing?" Zoro asked, ever blunt.

"A cat."

Mihawk asked the next question. "Do you know how to take care of one?"

Perona's response was condescending in tone. Even if he were the master of the mansion, even if he were the strongest swordsman in the world, even if he were one of the shichibukai... she didn't mince words. "What do you think I am? A five year old?" But still, she was wet. Ugh. And so was the cat.

She tossed the cat at Mihawk. He caught it and gave her a questioning look.

"You have a towel. Dry the thing off." Seriously, did she have to explain everything? "I need a shower. I'll be upstairs." And then, having pawned off her new pet immediately after having gotten home, she made her way to freshen up.

Zoro paused for a moment, looking at Mihawk, then the kitten. "...What was that about?"

FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:
[ there's a small scream as somebody... finds themselves very much not where they were a second ago ]

Wh-Where-

[ and the tone immediately takes a one-hundred eighty degree turn, turning from shock to complete adoration ]

A castle!? I'm in a castle?

Horohorohoro! This is great! [ she's throwing open the window now and... literally leaning halfway out the window ] A little too bright, but this place is great!

[ give her a few moments, castle, as she regains her wits... and stops hanging precariously out a window ]

But how did I end up here...? There wasn't that stupid bear this time. Did Zoro's sense of direction rub off on me?

What if I turn stupid next?

[ small pause... rrrngh ]

....I'll think about that later! [ she sounds a little irritated, but it quickly turns back to excitement ] I need to go explore this place!
